Abstract:

Cultural stereotype refers to the inflexible statements about a category of people, and these stereotypical statements are applied to all members of the certain group regardless of individual differences. It is usually oversimplified, over generalized and exaggerated. Cultural stereotype is a widespread phenomenon with a character of relative stability and continuity. The world we live in is made up of different groups, each of which has its own distinctive culture, manners, values and customs. The factors that contribute to the cultural stereotype include both social and personal ones. However, any form of stereotype holds a potential to be an obstruction to successful intercultural communication. If treated improperly, they will definitely become barriers to such communication. Therefore, this paper discusses the definition and the impact of stereotypes and the ways to turn the negative effects into communicating edges so that people can carry out intercultural communication in more effective way.

The word “stereotype” is an industry jargon which originated in the area of printing. A stereotype is an inflexible mold used to print the same image over and over again. However, when it comes to intercultural communication, the word refers to inflexible statements about a category of people. Stereotypical statements, either positive or negative, are applied to all members of a group regardless of individual differences. Through stereotyping, we can “make sense” of the world by categorizing and classifying people and situations we encounter.
