Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 Background
In this age of information explosion, the communication between the countries is becoming more and more frequent, which makes the importance of English increasing. As the most widely used language in all areas of human life, English has become one of the main ways to acquire information. For the ability of English reading directly affects the ability to access information, the teaching of English reading in senior school is one of the main content. In the process of English learning, reading is not only one of the important skills, but also the main way of acquisition of language input for learners. As is known to everyone, students can improve their ability of understanding and thinking ability through extensive reading of English materials and amount of language input, as well as can enrich the knowledge and enlarge vocabulary. Therefore, in senior English teaching, teachers always attach much importance to the learners' reading training. As the foundation of literacy, reading is a vital skill for senior high school students to master, which New English Curriculum Standards has, is clearly illustrated.

1.1背景

New English Curriculum Standards requires students should achieve differentbands of English levels at different stages (2017, P5). According to the Standards, it isrequired that senior high school students should achieve the three bands of goals, fromsix to eight, with Band 8 for senior high school graduates. Referring to the readingabilities, the Band 8 objective requires the students to achieve following objectives:(i) Getting to know the view points and the author’s attitude in the reading text(ii) Telling the differences among different types of articles(iii) Understanding the difficult or complex sentences by analyzing them(iv) Appreciating literature with the aid of the teacher(v) Getting information from electric materials or websites and do with them(vi) Being able to do reading materials added up to 360,000 words besides thosein the text books
In English papers of the national college entrance examination of our country,English reading comprehension has been playing a decisive role, almost accounts fornearly 1/3 of the proportion. According to the content of “English curriculumstandard", teachers must focus on the cultivation of students' four basic skills:listening, speaking, reading and writing. It is especially emphasized that the specialattention should be paid to the cultivation of students' reading ability in the four basicskills. However, nowadays the overall ability of our students is not optimistic, manystudents’ reading ability remains stagnant or even falling. It is difficult to meet therequirements of the new curriculum standard. When participating in the English exam,many students often can’t do well in reading comprehension, they consume muchtime and effort in reading English materials, but can’t desire effect. It’s difficult tomeet the requirements of the new curriculum standard. This requires the workersengaged in English teaching and research on senior high school English readingteaching to discu
