Abstract:

Harold Pinter is generally known as the principle representative of the contemporary British drama in the second half of the twentieth century. The term “Pinteresque” derived from his surname is used to represent a new genre of the British drama creation and is incorporated into The Oxford English Dictionary, referring to his unique style of drama, which shows his literature status in British drama history. Power struggle is an important theme in Pinter’s plays. The thesis analyzes the interpersonal power struggle in his three famous works The Room, The Homecoming and The Birthday Party to reveal the nature of humanity. This thesis is divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction, in which I give a brief introduction to Harold Pinter and his literary achievements, the content of this article and the practical significance. The second part is the literature review, in which I mainly introduce the domestic and foreign research on Pinter. The third part is the body part. The body part analyzes the power struggle reflected in Pinter’s drama from three aspects: power struggle in interpersonal relationship, power struggle in discourse and power struggle causing by menace. The last part is the conclusion. By interpreting the power struggle theme in Pinter’s three works, we can realize that the human nature has great effect on human behaviors. The desire for power exists in the heart of everyone. We should balance this desire to guide our life.
