Globalization draws people’s attention to cultural differences, and language, being both the key carrier and organic component of culture, is highlighted bylinguists. Since language, culture and communication are inseparable from each other,College English teaching should pay more attention to cultural teaching so as tocultivate university students’ intercultural communication competence. The authorintroduces the research background from the following aspects:

1.1.1 Relations of Language, Culture and Communication
Culture is regarded as communication (Hall, 1959), and what people of aparticular community use to communicate, namely language either in verbal ornonverbal form. The non-verbal form includes: body movements, eye contact, time, space, smell, touching, and the use of the social situation. Language teaching explainsthese under the notion of knowing how to communicate accurately and appropriatelyin a specific linguistic and cultural context.Language performs two important cultural functions: firstly, it helps to preserveculture; secondly, it transmits culture from generation to generation. Language is alsoimportant to all aspects of human interaction as Orbe and Harris (2017: 50) argue, “Inmost basic form, language is a tool humans have utilized thoughts, and feelings to others.” Language plays a significant part in life because it is capable of labelingthings, facilitating social interaction and cultural transmission. The labeling functionis concerned with identifying or naming a person, object, or act, so that he, she, or itmay be referred to in communication. With the help of language, people convey ideasand express emotions, and send information to others. These three functions aregenerally viewed as the primary purposes of communication. Communication servesvarious purposes in life and satisfies both social and individual needs. Researchersconsider some of these functions as a further means of highlighting the importance oflanguage to the study of communication (Larry, 2017: 140).According to Patrick (2017), culture is the evolving way of life of a group ofpeople, consisting of a shared set of practices associated with a shared set of products, based upon a shared set of perspectives on the world, and set within specific socialcontexts. People need to be able to express themselves and communicate withmembers of the culture as they get along with those members in the myriad practicesand products which make up their way of life. In addition, people need to do thisproperly, using the suitable language in the suitable way, in accordance with theanticipations of the members of the culture. Such is the language of self-expression,communication, and social interaction, based on the direct experience of the culturalcommunity.
