The general educational goals at present are learning to learn, learning to do, learning to cooperatewith each other and learning to be. The English Curriculum Standards (2017) requires that the tendency ofover-stressing language grammar rules and language points and ignoring of students’ practical capability intraditional English teaching should be avoided. It puts importance on students’ interests, living experience,and cognitive level, and emphasizes students’ participation, practice, cooperation and communication. Itturns language learning into a process in which students can cultivate active affection and attitude to thinkcreatively, and can be willing to practice. The English Curriculum Standard also advocates that instructorsshould focus on the students, put them in the dominate place, strengthening the functions of languagecommunication, and pay more attention to process of evaluation (English Curriculum Standards, 2017).Jin Ying described the five curriculum goal structures in the English Curriculum Standard for JuniorMiddle School: language ability, language knowledge, affect and attitude, learning strategy and culturalsense. The affection objective of Level 5: all junior students should at least reach this level) is stated asfollows: 1. to have the willing for and interest in learning English, and glad to be volunteer to take part inthe activities which contribute to the improvement of English proficiency.2. to have proper motivation tolearn English, and know clearly that the objective of learning English is to communicate and express.3. tohave strong confidence in English learning and be brave enough to communicate with classmates andexpress them in English.4. to be able to deal with the difficulties in learning and willing to ask for help ifnecessary.5. to understand and respect other classmates in communication.6. to have strong desires tocooperate with classmates and be glad to share learning materials.7. to be able to use English to introduceour own country’s culture in communication.8. to learn from and respect other countries’ culture, and formthe spirit of international cooperation (English Curriculum Standards, 2017).Obviously, student-student interaction’s basic notions are reflected in the English Curriculum Standard.What is more, with the development of China's economy and the world globalization, people are glad tospend more and more time in studying English in order to colorful their life, and to work and communicatein the information era. But there are two problems: first, as we know, the ideal size of language teaching isthe small class with less than 30 students. Only under this situation can English teaching focus on thecharacteristics of language and give enough opportunities to students to cooperate and communicate witheach other. As a result, the increase of the number of the students brings about difficulties and challenges toboth English teaching and learning. The students have to sit in a large classroom, in which they “sit instraight rows facing the teacher, who does the most of the talking; and in which students and teacher sharethe common first language, the talking tends not to be in English”(Parry & Su Xiaojun,1998).
