Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background
随着越来越多的大学生入学率,大学英语教学已经遭受了巨大的压力,尤其是教师资源的短缺,这是不利于学生的表现或多或少。其结果是,经过三年或四年的英语学习,学生的交际能力仍然疲弱,可能无法满足社会需求。在这样严峻的形势下,中国教育部实施教学改革,并于2017年出台了新的大学英语课程教学要求,旨在培养学生的全面能力。它呼吁各高校的大学英语课程的基础上,做出科学性,系统性及个体英语教学大纲。为了适应新课程的要求,有大学英语教材,教学改革中不可或缺的一部分,是蓬勃发展,为更好的服务适应不同地区。特别是近年来,教材开发已经引起了极大的关注。材料反映的编译器的理论,对于语言的本质和学习为中心,一个国家的教育思想,内容和措施上的具体要求。为教师和学生掌握知识的工具,他们的蓝图,英语论文,使他们发挥了至关重要的影响实现的目的和目标,并从根本上作用整个教育水平的学校,培养合格人才。谢尔顿(1988年,第237页)指出,英语论文教科书是在英语学习的过程中,可见心脏哈钦森(1987,第96页)也认为,教科书是在英语学习和教学中最重要的元素,因为它是在英语学习的核心内容和各种教学活动的中心。在中国,教科书已经成为短缺的英语语言环境,由于语言输入的主要渠道。
With increasing enrollment of the college students, college English teaching has sufferedtremendous pressure, especially the shortage of teacher resources, which is more or lessdetrimental to students’ performances. As a result, after three or four years English learning,students’ communicative competence is still weak and may not meet the requirement of the society.Under such a severe situation, the Education Ministry of China implemented a teaching reform andpublished its new College English Curriculum Requirement in 2017 with an aim to cultivatestudents’ all-round abilities. It appeals to each college to make the scientific, systematic andindividual English syllabus on the basis of the college English curriculum. In order to meet the newcurriculum requirement, those college English textbooks, as an indispensable part of teachingreform, are flourishing and adapted to different regions for better service.Especially in recent years, teaching materials development has aroused great attention.Materials can reflect the compilers’ theories concerning the nature of language and learning as wellas one country’s specific requirements on educational thought, content and methods. They areblueprints for teachers and tools for students to acquire knowledge, so they play a vital role inachieving aims and objectives and have fundamental influence on the whole education level ofschools and cultivation of qualified talents. Sheldon (1988, p. 237) pointed out that textbook is thevisible heart in the process of English learning; Hutchinson (1987, p. 96) also believed thattextbook is the most essential element in English learning and teaching, for it is the core contents inEnglish learning and the center in all kinds of teaching activities. In China, textbook has becomethe main channel for language input due to the shortage of English language environment.
Therefore, English materials with complete systems and reasonable structure are not onlyadvantageous for students to grasp knowledge systematically but also beneficial to theirdevelopment of comprehensive language skills. In addition, materials introduce the culture of othercountries or regions to students for their better understanding of the world culture and cultivation of cross-culture awareness and communication ability. Our National College English Syllabus (1999)demonstrated that textbook is the important guarantee for the accomplishment of the teaching goalsestablished by the Teaching Syllabus. To lay a better language foundation for the students, developtheir language competence and improve their culture awareness, textbook should be able toprovide the best language samples as well as systematic and pertinent materials for languagepractice activities.
