Languages borrow words from different languages, when there are cultural contacts. Korean has borrowed many words from other languages, among which English tops the list. These loanwords change in their phonology, morphology and semantics from language to language. This thesis refers only to English loanwords used in Korean. The purpose of this thesis is to help English learners reduce the errors they might make when they communicate in English, by analyzing the differences between the correct English words and English loanwords in three aspects: Phonology, Morphology, and Semantics. From the phonological aspect, English loanwords change to fit into the Korean phonological structure. English loanwords are classified in two sound substitutional types. First, the substitution occurs because there is no exactly corresponding sounds in Korean. Second, the other substitution occurs even though Korean has the corresponding sounds because Koreans articulate English loanwords on the basis of spelling instead of sound. One reason is that English loanwords originally came from Japanese. Nowadays, this problem of spelling pronunciation is decreasing, because many young people are given to plenty of exposure to the native English speakers and mass media produced in English. Another problem is that the stress patterns of the English words are radically different from those of the original English nouns, which causes a lot of difficulties in communication in English. From the morphological aspect, English loanwords frequently show unique forms which do not exist in English. These words also function as a noun in Korean. It is the general trend that English loanwords are used predominantly among the younger generation, This thesis examines and classifies some English loanwords according to their word-formation methods such as clipping, acronymization, blending. compounding and more. From the semantics aspect, we can see a clash of the meaning and then a change of semantic scope and that of semantic status when they are accepted a s apart of Korean words. The change of semantic scope includes the extension, specialization, and transfer of meaning. The change of semantic status includes pejoration and amelioration of meaning. In conclusion, This study on English loanwords shows the difference between correct English words and Koreanized English loanwords. The recognition of the difference helps the user of English as a second language use English adequately. Also, this suggests that English teachers should make a constant effort to consult English dictionary each time they encounter English loanwords and encourage students to use the correct English words.
