This study analyzes the morphological and semantic properties of loan words from western world that had been significantly introduced in Korea since the end of 19th century and the historical change of their writing norm in order to accurately identify the lexical system of modern Korean language and how the Korean language is used in daily life.
To this end, this study tried to more systematically compare and analyze the concept and scope of loan words specified differently by researcher and to set the concept and scope of new loan words to be suitable for the present use of Korean language by examining the previous studies on loan words. In accordance with the results of examination on three conditions of loan words, 'historicity', 'assimilability' and 'necessity,' it was concluded that the loan words could be defined as the ‘words used in accordance with the semantic necessity to supplement any scope that the native languages are not developed for as well as requiring the assimilation process to be settled in the native language system as the loan words from other countries.’
In Chapter 2, the change of spelling rules of loan words in the history was examined in order to analyze the properties and change of loan words in Korean language system. The aspects of loan words by period were extensively investigated in consideration of the change of spelling rules of loan words. By identifying the aspects and features of introduction of loan words by period using the loan words by the term of 10-year and comparing and analyzing the change of individual loan word spelling in detail, the actual application of loan words spelling rules was examined.
In Chapter 3, this study analyzed the morphological features of loan words by dividing into the features by a part of speech and structural features. In accordance with the results, the noun comprised most of loan words as 91.54%. Onomatopoetic and mimetic words couldn't be found. It could be because the onomatopoetic and mimetic words strongly expressed the mental and cultural uniqueness. Moreover, compound, derivation, severance, contraction and creation of similar words of loan words in various types observed in using Korean language were analyzed to find out the structural features of loan words.
In Chapter 4, for the semantic features of loan words, the features of loan words were analyzed by semantic category including daily products including clothing, food and accommodation, food, activities and information media. The semantic change and the semantic relationship between loan words and native language were examined. Diverse semantic change including semantic collision and differentiation between loan words, semantic augmentation and reduction of each loan word and semantic switching were investigated by case study.
Assimilation, frequency of use, semantic features and semantic difference against the native language were analyzed and classified into 4 categories and the semantic features were analyzed by examining each loan word by category. For identifying the semantic features of loan words and native language more concretely and the actual application of them in daily life, the application of native language that competes against the loan words in semantic aspects was analyzed by the <Survey on Frequency of Use using the key words in Internet Search >.
In accordance with the results of analysis, when native language had competency enough to deliver the meaning or implication in the competition against loan words, the native language gradually secured superior position in the competition. The decisive factor determining the competition between loan words and native language was the "delivery of meaning", which was found to play the most important role in the survey on frequency of use of semantically competing words. With the survey, it was confirmed that effort to develop and settle the refined words delivering the most accurate and intuitive meaning is the critical factor determining the superiority in the competition between loan words and native language.
