This thesis aims at investigating the effects of the Busan dialect on the stress of English loan words by conducting an acoustic experiment through the Pratt program. Most second language learners start learning a target language after they have acquired their first language. Therefore, it is certain that their first language will interfere when they speak a target language, and phonological interference is significant. For speakers with a dialect, however, acquiring correct English pronunciation is particularly challenging because it is not easy for them to perceive the interference of their dialect. With respect to English loan words, some researchers claimed that most people from Busan speak English loan words much the same way they speak their own language. Previous studies, however, have dealt with this matter based only on words in a citation form. So it remains an open question whether and how the Busan dialect affects the stress of English loan words when speaking sentences. To answer this question, the present research conducted an acoustic experiment to see (1)whether the Busan dialect affects the stress of English loan words in a sentence form, and if so, (2)whether there is any relation between the intensity of the Busan dialect influence and the speakers' English proficiency. To answer these two questions, 375 English loan words spoken by 15 Busan speakers were recorded and analyzed through the Praat program. The results then were compared with those of previous studies. To summarize the results, Busan dialect interference, indeed, appeared when producing English loan words, but not so considerably as previous studies claimed. This is because, unlike previous studies, reading materials here were written in English, and presented in a sentence form, not in a citation form. This led the participants to think of the reading materials as English. Many of the participants therefore, produced the words the way they speak English as much as possible and when they were not certain about the stress of the words, some followed Busan language stress rules, while some did not. In terms of the relation between the intensity of the Busan dialect interference and speakers' English proficiency, speakers with a low English proficiency showed greater Busan dialect interference than those with a high proficiency, and those with experience of living or staying in English speaking countries appeared to be particularly less affected by their native language. In spite of some limitations, these findings could provide a better understanding of the effects of the Busan dialect on the English pronunciation of Busan speakers. Applying voice analysis programs to English classes is suggested as one of the practical applications of the findings. I am confident that this research will help in further studies with the same and/or other different dialects, and this study will also provide better guidance for English teachers and learners living in Busan province.
