This study seeks to investigate the relationship between the advance of ICT and the difficulty of the elderly in absorbing relatively new market information with a case of the Internet-based guide books for the elderly. Focusing on the readability of the book in delivering necessary information, this study relies on three key concepts (1) effective communication of meaning, (2) visibility (or design component) such as sizes and styles of font, and (3)the interaction of the previous two concepts.
This study is a response to the fast coming of the aged society in Korea. Defined as a person aged 65 and over, the elderly population takes up 7.9 percent of the total population and is projected to increase to over 14 percent in 2020. The aged society is characterized by a large number of the elderly population with diverse social and economic needs, which cause the quantitative and qualitative increase of silver industry. However, the silver industry has not effectively responded to the diverse customer needs. Especially their printed materials do not focus on communicating its service with the potential customers, leaving their values only its existence. At the core of the problem lies in the readability of the printed material. Furthermore, the advance of the information and communication technology, based on the Internet, change the communication pattern between the market and the customer and the life pattern of the aged. Therefore, training on the technology has been raised for the elderly population who are slow in adapting to the changes by so-called the digital society.
In addressing the readability issue of the electronically printed material, this study consists of five chapters. The introduction chapter establishes the relevance and significance of this study. The first chapter reviews the existing study about the aged society and offers basic understanding about the diverse needs of the elderly population. The second chapter looks at the current status and problems of the printed materials for the elderly and builds a conceptual framework that defines the scope and component of the readability. Chapter three offers comprehensive information about research design. Chapter four s the finding of the research and looks for ways to improve the readability of the electronically printed materials. The last chapter discusses the social and industrial implication of the readability.
The findings of this study are largely summarized into three. First, the elderly shows the lack of understanding on new terminology and foreign language which are newly imported and adapted. Thus, authors need to attach their meanings for effective communication. Second, the elderly shows improved understanding with the font size of 13-point and the shorter sentence. In reading the information with smaller font (smaller than 13 point), gothic font communicates the information better than Myungo font. Lastly, overall focus should be placed on careful organization of the information based upon the difficulty of the information and systematic development of publishing guideline that addresses the visual and cognitive need of the elderly population in the digital age.
