The purpose of this study was to develop an educational teaching plan for idiomatic expressions intended for Chinese students learning Korean. This study was motivated by the problems that were identified when the native (national) language teaching materials in China and South Korea were analyzed with respectto the teaching materials of Korean as a foreign language. In China, the teaching materials on Chinese for native speakers heavily emphasize idiomatic expressions as part of the writing curriculum. In contrast, in South Korea, idiomatic expressions are emphasized in the vocabulary and grammar curriculums. This clearly shows the different educational approaches used in China and South Korea when it comes to idiomatic expressions. As a consequence, teaching materials of Korean idiomatic expressions within China are different fromthe teaching materials of Korean idiomatic expressions within South Korea in the approaches used. This is attributed to how each country differs in theirnative language education for idiomatic expressions. That is, idiomatic expression education within China is acting is being affected by a negative transfer stemming from the methods of Chinese language education.   The plan developed in this study targeted advanced Chinese students of the Korean language. Even these advanced learners of Korean have difficulties acquiringthe use and understanding of Korean idiomatic expressions. Such difficulties are primarily attributed to the fact that the education of idiomatic expressions has not evolved and to the fact that there is no awareness of the differences between the two countries with respect to idiomatic expressions. Therefore, this study set out to resolve this issue. It compared how idiomatic expressions are taught differently between the two countries and based on the findings, developed an educational plan of idiomatic expressions for Chinese students of Korean.  The analysis of the teaching materials was done in two stages to understand the current state of matters with regard to how Korean idiomatic expressions are taught to advanced Chinese students of Korean. This study analyzed the differences in the Korean idiomatic expression teaching materials targeting native speakers and those targeting foreign learners. This was done to compare the differences between China and South Korea in native language education. That is, this study aimed to determine the current state of practices with regard to idiomatic expression education based on this analysis of the teaching materials. In the first-stage analysis, the characteristics of idiomatic expression teaching materials were determined for the two countries, taking into account the effects of L1 transfer. In the second-stage analysis, Korean learning materials published in South Korea and China were analyzed to examinethe different aspects of idiomatic expression education between the two countries. Based on the results of the analysis, our aim was to understand how idiomatic expressions are taught to learners of Korean, in order to develop an effective plan of idiomatic expression education.  Chapter1 examined the purpose and necessity of this study, as well as its research problems and previous studies on idiomatic expression education. Chapter2 discusses the theoretical background of Korean idiomatic expression education. The concepts and characteristics of transfer in learning a foreign language as a second language were examined. In addition, we discussed language transfer that takes place when an understanding of how idiomatic expressions work is gained. Lastly, basic research of idiomatic expressions was conductedin addition to contrastive analysis in preparation for the development of the educational plan. Chapter3 analyzed the teaching materials based on the discussions in Chapter 2. First, current practices with regard to idiomatic expressions were examined for South Korea and China. Then, Korean learning materials targeting Chinese students were examined. The learning materials published in South Korea and China wereanalyzed and compared.  The section on idiomatic expressions in the learning materials was examined in order to investigate how positive cultural transfer takes place, and how to overcome negative cultural transfer.  Finally, in Chapter 4, based on the findings of the preceding analysis, an effective educational plan for idiomatic expressions was developed. The aim was to enablethe learners to perform more effective communication as according to the purpose of this study, and let them use idiomatic expressions more naturally.  This study examined differences between China and South Korea in native language idiomatic expression education by analyzing teaching materials in the respective countries. Furthermore, it developed an educational plan of idiomatic expressions that takes into account the differing educational approaches used in South Korea and China.
