When people are learning foreign languages, the amount of vocabularies they acquired represents their communicational competence. Therefore, it would be helpful to improve their communication skills if people better understand idioms which have habitually been used for a long time. Idioms are things that are combined with more than two words and have a special meaning. In order to understand idioms better, literature is an effective educational method both linguistically and culturally because it shows human’s life and the society of the times.
In this study, a well-loved literature by Japanese people, 『窓際のとっとちゃん』 and 『TOTO CHAN: The Little Girl at the Window』(Korean version) are looked at. This study aims at helping Japanese speakers better understand Korean by comparing and contrasting body-related idioms in the literature in both Korean and Japanese.
In order to analyze the idioms in both books, three types are looked at through comparison and contrast: the first type Korean idioms vs. Japanese Idioms, the second Korean non-idioms vs. Japanese idioms, the third Korean idioms vs. Japanese non-idioms. Then the similarities and differences as well as the difficulty levels in the idioms of two languages are examined and applied in a real teaching plan. As a result, it is expected to be desirable if they are presented in the order of the first, the second, and the third type when idioms are taught to Japanese speakers who are learning Korean.
The teaching plan adopted is an awareness step by Ogino Sinsaku(2012) and three steps of vocabulary education by Seal(1991) and the principle of teaching plan by Adachi Noriko(2015) which has been widely adapted to five steps of introduction, presentation, practice, application, and conclusion in teaching Korean. In an idiom teaching plan using 『TOTO CHAN: The Little Girl at the Window』(2000), Japanese speakers would be able to learn Korean by comparing and contrasting idioms, expressions, and background in both Korean and Japanese.
Despite a limit to adjusting the findings to the teaching-learning activities in a real situation, it is worth trying teaching expressions in literature by comparing and contrasting them in both native language and a target language. It is therefore expected that the findings from this study could benefit Japanese speakers who want to learn Korean later on.
