This study explored the characteristics and the differences of 'Giving and Receiving' Verbs' in Korean and Japanese.
Giving and receiving verbs express the action of giving and receiving among people. There are 「juda」,「badda」and「dalda」in Korean, while there are 「yaru」,「kureru」and「morau」in Japanese. They share the same structure and the basic meaning in Korean and Japanese, but they also show differences. These common things and differences cause learners to make an error. So it is worth studying.
Giving and receiving verbs play a role in sentences as main verbs and auxiliary verbs. In case of main verbs, the basic meaning is 'moving' in both Korean and Japanese. But the quality of argument that two languages take is totally different. Korean giving and receiving verbs extend to favor and non favor in meaning, choosing abstracts objects as well as concretes ones. But Japanese ones are limited to favor, taking only concrete objects.
When they are used as auxiliary verbs through grammaticalization, both languages reveal diverse differences. In Korean, ‘-e juda’ conveys favor, non-favor, intention, request, politeness and idiom, but ‘badda’ is only used as main verbs. In Japanese, 3 giving and receiving verbs have functions of auxiliary verbs. expressing favor and non favor. Each of them also shows different meaning. There are intention in ‘-te yaru’ and request in ‘-te kureru’. ‘-te morau’ expresses intention, request, the passive and the causative.
