Acquisition of Relative Clauses by Japanese Learners Who speak Korean as a Second Language

The aim of this study is to analyze acquisition of relative clauses by Japanese learners who speak Korean as a second language. In addition, this study discusses how the mother tongues are affected in the process of learning relative clauses in Korean language.
People commonly believe that it is easier for Japanese to learn Korean than any other foreign languages. It is because the order of the words and structure of relative clauses and nouns in Korean and Japanese very similar. But ironically, when Japanese people write sentences in Korean, they often create errors because of these similarities. Usages of Japanese and Korean in the syntactic structures are obviously different, but Japanese learners often overlook these differences and tend to translate literally word for word, which gives them more room to make mistakes. Therefore, it is necessary to teach the similarities and differences of syntactic structures between Japanese and Korean to these language learners. These also shows that knowing relative clauses used in Korean can also affect Japanese students’ usage of Korean language.
Meanwhile, in the study of the relative clauses, the Noun Phrase Accessibility Hierarchy (NPAH) has been considered as a typological universality. However, when learning Japanese as a second language, NPAH is not always met. Therefore, considering the similarities in relative clauses between Japanese and Korean, it can be expected that NPAH also will not be applied when learning Korean as a second language.
This study was conducted by 20 Japanese students who had already finished learning Korean relative clause through accomplishing picture task and the sentence combination task.
In the result, it was confirmed that under both tasks, the NPAH was not consistent. Between two, the sentence combination task was especially suitable for detecting aspects of Japanese learners who used Korean relative clause. In this study, analyzing of the sentence created by the Japanese students during the sentence combination task shows following three conclusions:
First, Japanese use different relative clauses from Korean. Second, unlike Koreans, Japanese place relative clauses at the beginning of a sentence. Third, Japanese often omit subjects of sentences.
These results were drawn because of the learners who use Japanese syntactic strategy when writing in Korean. This will highlight the importance of the syntactic structure in language learning process. Through this study, learners are able to produce less errors when creating sentences in Korean. In this sense, this study will be helpful for Japanese students who study Korean.
