This study researched usage patterns of IPTV kids VOD and analyzed factors to influence kids VOD usage on IPTV. For that, this study set the factors to influence usages of IPTV kids VOD as subgenre, characters present or absence, first broadcasting channel, running time, language, and service period, based on VOD usage studies as focusing on the other genre. Then, this study considered the number of using 213 titles of VOD provided by a domestic IPTV for 12 months in 2014 as analysis subject.
As the results of this research, first this study found that the most used IPTV kids VOD is a children’s song category. Second, the number of using IPTV VOD contents with characters present is higher than the other contents without characters, and especially in children’s song and animation genre this study could find that the factor of characters present or absence influences VOD usage very much. Third, the number of using IPTV kids VOD that is firstly broadcasted in EBS is the highest, and the other contents which are firstly broadcasted on IPTV as following in the second. Meanwhile, this study finds that, in case of contents that are firstly broadcasted in terrestrial television, the number of using VOD is lower than in case of IPTV so it is needed to have a new perspective about windowing strategy of kids contents. Fourth, the shorter running time of the contents is the higher the number of using IPTV kids VOD is. Fifth, although the number of using Korean language contents is high generally, in case of animation and education categories Non-verbal contents are used much more. Sixth when it comes to IPTV kids contents, this study finds that the latest contents could not influence the number of using VOD absolutely. It means that, supplying kids contents, IPTV platform secures competition with the newest contents and steady seller contents certified as a good thing together to improve service quality.
As the result of this study, as IPTV platform maximizes using kids VOD and competes channel services as a independent window, it should be required to invest original contents aggressively and uncover specialized contents for new media. Also, the IPTV platform should try to improve service value and customer satisfaction not only that it could be a role of prior windows to reduce holdback with channels and to extent simultaneous broadcast but also that it provides certified high quality contents.
