There are many various immigrants living in Korea where a multicultural society is beginning to form. Among them, married female immigrants who account for 85.4% of married immigrants don't encounter difficulties in their daily life by their korean-speaking and listening proficiency which has been acquired(learnt) through the married life making them exposed to the environment using spoken language.
However their written language use ability(reading and writing) fall behind remarkably compared to their spoken language use ability(speaking and listening). Besides, they need to receive an reading education to improve their written language use ability that is necessary for educating their own children as well as for adjusting themselves to Korean society
Accordingly, this study designed the teaching-learning method of Korean reading using multicultural fictions for the married female immigrants with Korean proficiency of advanced levels. I chose <Rainbow from tropical night> as the multicultural fiction for reading text and applied group reading as a teaching method of reading.
The continuation of study was carried out by reviewing some studies related to reading in Korean language education and then some studies using multicultural fictions. Based on this review, I suggested that the studies using multicultural fictions should be activated in Korean language education. And I also presented the reasons for the usefulness of multicultural fictions from various angles such as language education, literature education, and culture education. Based on those reasons, I proposed five application directions of multicultural fictions in Korean reading education for married female immigrants. Finally, I suggested the standard of selection of multicultural fictions and chose <Rainbow from tropical night> as the reading text.
In this study, the teaching-learning method of reading multicultural fictions such as Preparation - Reading & comprehension - Sharing & review stage are suggested for the Korean reading education using multicultural fictions. In detail, those stages are divided into Introduction - Group reading - Deepening & Expansion - Sharing & experiencing - Review and some activities that can be used for each stage are suggested.
The texts for Korean language education for married female immigrants have been limited to Korean fairy tales and s. This study selected the multicultural fiction that is contemporaneous with learners and used it as the texts of Korean language education for married female immigrants. And the teaching-learning method reading multicultural fictions was suggested with step-by-step reading activities in detail designed for the integral teaching and learning of literature education and culture education as well as language education. Lastly, group reading mode was applied proposing the integral teaching and learning of speaking, writing, listening based on reading.
Multicultural fictions are the texts of Korean language education for not only married female immigrants but also various Korean learners with different purposes. Therefore studies using multicultural fictions should be continued.
