The purpose of this study is to analyze the errors in word spacing made by migrant workers learning Korean and to suggest the contents of word spacing education and teaching methods suitable for them.
To achieve this, the survey was conducted on migrants workers who learn Korean at Incheon Support Center Foreign Workers and the following results showed.
First, over 80 % of migrant workers graduated high school or college, that means they have ability to learn Korean grammar.
Second, it was found that we should give more interest in word spacing education for migrant workers who have difficulties in spacing word and want to learn it.
Third, compared to the error rate of Korean elementary school students, Korean middle school students, Chinese Korean learners and married migrant women, it was found that migrant workers showed a relatively high percentage of wrong answers in the word spacing of postpositions.
Based on those analysis, the following guidelines are suggested.
First, the word spacing education for migrant workers who are from a variety of different nations should start with understanding their mother languages.
Second, it is more effective to explain to them about the importance of word spacing in Korean not with the examples of sentence level but with those of vocabulary level.
Third, migrant workers need to be educated on the basic grammar of a formality particle and a dependent noun for improving their word spacing skill.
I hope more researches continue on the word spacing education and they would contribute to the improvement in the migrant workers’ proficiency in Korean.

본 연구에서는 이주노동자를 대상으로 정확한 의미전달을 위해 가장 기초적이고 중요한 띄어쓰기 교육에 대해 효율적인 지도방안을 제시하고자 한다.
이를 위해 인천외국인력지원센터에서 한국어 학습을 하고 있는 이주노동자들의 띄어쓰기 설문지와 레벨 테스트 주관식 문항 답안을 분석하여 다음과 같은 특징을 알 수 있었다.
첫째, 이주노동자들은 80% 이상이 고등교육을 이수하여 문법 습득 능력을 갖고 있다고 볼 수 있다.
둘째, 이주노동자는 띄어쓰기를 어려워하고 배우기를 희망하고 있는 것으로 조사되어, 앞으로 이들을 위한 띄어쓰기 교육에 더 많은 관심을 가져야 한다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
셋째, 한국어 화자의 쓰기에서는 잘 나타나지 않는 조사의 띄어쓰기 오류가 이주노동자에게서는 비교적 높게 나타났으며, 의존명사에 대한 띄어쓰기도 어려워하는 것으로 조사되었다.
이러한 분석을 기반으로 이주노동자들을 위한 띄어쓰기 교육 내용과 학습요소를 다음과 같이 제시하였다.
첫째, 다양한 국적의 학습자로 구성되어 있는 이주노동자의 한국어 수업에서 띄어쓰기 교육은 이주노동자의 모국어 이해에서부터 출발해야 된다. 둘째, 이주노동자들은 문법 습득 능력이 가능한 성인 학습자이지만 어휘력이 부족하므로 띄어쓰기 예문을 제시할 때에는 문장 단위보다는 띄어쓰기에 따라 의미가 달라지는 쉬운 어휘를 제시하는 것이 효과적이다.
셋째, 이주노동자들에게 가장 기본적이고 자주 사용하는 격조사와 의존명사의 띄어쓰기와 관련된 문법적 지식은 반드시 설명을 해 주어야 하나 한국인 화자들도 혼란스러워 하는 띄어쓰기의 문법적 요소는 학습자의 수준에 따라 생략할 수 있다.
앞으로도 이러한 교육을 위한 후속 연구가 활성화되어 이주노동자들의 한국어 능력이 크게 향상되기를 기대한다.
