한국과 인도는 고대부터 독자적인 문명을 발전시켜 왔으며 또한 상호간 교류해 왔다. 양국 관계에 관한 언급은 고대 1세기로 거슬러 올라간다. 그 후 4세기에 불교가 전파되면서 한ㆍ인 관계의 한 초석을 이루었으며 많은 한국 스님들이 경전을 구하러 부처의 땅으로 고난의 순례를 했다. 인도 스님들도 불교의 복음을 전파하기 위해 한국으로 방문한 바가 있다.
조선시대에 들어와 유교의 숭상과 불교의 억제로 상호간의 문화적 협력이 쇠퇴하게 되었다. 하지만 현대에 들어와 특히 식민지로서 억압을 격고 있었던 아시아인들의 영감의 원천이 된 타고르, 간디와 네루 같은 추앙을 받은 영향력이 있는 지도자들에 의하여 상호간 인식이 재조명되었다.
본 논문에서는 특히 1920년대의 한국을 방문한 인도 여행자들이 작성한 힌디어로 된 기행문에서 한국의 언어와 문화에 대한 언급을 통해 그 당시 인도 지식인들의 한국에 대한 인식을 해석하려고 했다. 또 21세기에 들어와 한ㆍ인 간의 교역이 확대되면서도 인도 내에서 한국의 언어, 사회와 문화 등에 대한 인도인의 인식이 부족해 보인다.
한국과 인도는 불교문화, 식민지배, 민주주의 개념과 범아시아주의와 민족주의 등의 과정으로 사회문화적 변동을 이루는 데에 있어서 유사한 점이 있다.
본 연구에서는 1920년 후로부터 현재까지 인도인들이 그려낸 문화, 사회, 역사 분야의 여러 자료를 활용하여 인도인의 한국문화인식을 고찰하면서 양국의 비대칭적 인식에 대한 배경을 고찰하고자 한다.
특히 인도의 한국문화인식과 관련 다양한 근본자료들과 제4장에서는 2012년 인도의 네루대학교와 델리대학교 인도인 한국어학습자를 비롯해 인도의 중ㆍ고등학생 및 일반인까지의 대상으로 한 한국과 한국문화 인식조사에서 한국어를 배우는 대학생의 한국인식도가 중ㆍ고등학생과 일반인보다 나은 것으로 나타났으며 본 연구가 인도 내 한국문화와 한국학의 전파를 위해 중요한 연구 자료가 될 것이라 판단된다.

Available records show that the history of interactions between India and Korea dates back to the first century A.D. Interactions between the two independent ancient civilizations were largely indirect. This was because there was no direct land route between India and Korea. The spread of Buddhism later in the 4th century provided the foundation for cultural interactions. Afterwards, many of the Korean monks and scholars went on pilgrimage to the land of Buddha in search of scriptures and knowledge. Indian monks also visited Korea to spread the teachings of Buddha. The policy of expanding Confucianism during the Joseon period as well as a decline in the practice of Buddhism over a long period of time resulted in decreasing cultural interactions among the people of the two countries.
In recent times, cultural relations between the two nations were rekindled during the period of colonial hardships under the leadership of important Indian leaders like Gandhi, Tagore and Nehru. Indian writers like Rahul Sankrityan and Shiv Prasad Gupta visited Korea via Japan and wrote their observations. This study attempts to explain the history of India-Korea relations and objectively examine the Korean cultural perceptions of India. We emphasize on the perceptions about Korea among the Indian intellectuals during the colonial period. The study of Indian travelogues during this period introduces the sociocultural perceptions of Korea. Bilateral trade relation between India and Korea strengthened in later part of the 20thcentury encouraging visits among high delegations of both countries. The study examines the perceptions about Korea among Indian government representatives. In this study, we examine the awareness about Korea's society and culture among a cross section of the Indian population, cutting across students learning Korean language, middle and high school students and the general public.
The result of the survey shows that the majority of Korean language learners in India have good knowledge of Korea’s society and culture. However, most of the middle and high school students as well as the general public in India have little knowledge about Korea. If the result of the survey is a representation of the India’s general population, then it shows that the vast majority of Indians are still quite unaware of Korea’s society and culture. The study recommends that both countries make conscious effort to explore programs that will encourage interactions among its citizens. This can further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between both countries especially in the area of culture, trade commerce and others.
