The purpose of this study is to investigate female marriage immigrants's requests with regard to the direction of learning the Korean language as well as their satisfaction with Korean language textbooks currently used by them; and to provide data necessary to develop or revise Korean language textbooks for female marriage immigrants in keeping with their needs.
For this, the following problems were set up for the study.
First, what is satisfaction with Korean language textbooks perceived by female marriage immigrants?
Secondly, what are needs perceived by female marriage immigrants with respect to Korean language textbooks?
Thirdly, what are learning requests perceived by female marriage immigrants?
For solving the above problems, an SPSSWIN (version 17.0) questionnaire survey was conducted targeting 100 female marriage immigrants who studied the Korean language at the Health Family Support Center, the Multi-cultural Family Support Center, the Immigration Center, and the Immigrant Labor Welfare Center in Changwon; and the results of its statistical processing are as follows:
First, as a result of investigation on satisfaction with Korean language textbooks perceived by the female marriage immigrants showed that the longer a period of residence, the higher their satisfaction. This means that textbooks which take a learner's level into consideration were not properly prepared for learners of a short period of residence. In terms of form, satisfaction in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing was most high, while satisfaction with diagrams & pictures, the font size, assignments or learning activity reflection was low. In terms of contents, satisfaction with the area of a command of vocabulary appropriate for places which consists of contents necessary for daily life, and with the area of Korean culture, an essential part for the language acquisition, was high, while satisfaction in the areas of pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and intonation was low.
Secondly, the results of the analysis of the female marriage immigrants' requests as to Korean language textbooks show that they perceived the necessity of 'medical institution' to be the highest, followed by 'education,' 'traffic & communication,' and 'the culture of food, clothing, & shelter,' while the younger they were, the higher the necessity they perceived in the order of 'etiquette, traffic & communication, and medical institution'; and the shorter the period of their residence, the higher necessity they perceived in etiquette, the culture of food, clothing, & shelter, and mass culture; and so there was significant differences.
Thirdly, as a result of analyzing learning requests perceived by the female marriage immigrants, it was found that immigrants below the age of 30 and wished most to learn from 'an expert teacher,' followed by 'a visit teacher,' and 'a fellow countryman,' and the immigrants of 30 and over from 'an expert teacher,' followed by 'by oneself,' and 'a visit teacher.' The reasons for wanting to learn the Korean language showed differences in that middle-school grads and under answered 'employment,' and high-school grads gave priority to 'conversation with family,' and 'their child education.' As for hours for learning the Korean language, it was found that they want to study longer than the current two hours which happen twice a week, and that they prefer an educational institution of easy and convenient access from their houses. As for teaching materials, they raise the necessity for textbooks and workbooks, which is deemed to reflect their desire for the native speaker-level fluency of the Korean language.
It should be noted that female marriage immigrants' Korean language education thus acts as an important factor in acquiring the Korean language. The female marriage immigrants who should acquire a second language as adult learners are in a situation where the learning is optional, and so it is likely that they will quit learning if their expected requirements are not fulfilled. Such situation not only brings about language fossilization, but also becomes an impediment to life toward which they head as members of Korean society. Therefore, more active and considerate attention should be paid to a direction of education they want lest they have difficulty in settling down in Korean society.
