This study is about one of Korean teaching methods using TV advertising languages and it has the goal of providing teachers with the right instructional models of Korean Language Education for foreigners using TV advertising languages.
TV advertisements can benefit Korean Language Education. First, TV advertisements persuade people to buy something, so they can develop speaking or writing strategies in persuasion. Second, there are rhythm and useful expressions repeatedly appeared in TV advertisements and they are effective in teaching pronunciations of Korean language. Third, TV advertisements use various Korean vocabularies that can be applied to teaching vocabularies. Fourth, there are various types of sentences and structures that are repeatedly presented in TV advertising languages. They are available for teaching grammar of Korean language.
This study, based on selecting audio-visual materials for education, tried to devise appropriate criteria for selecting TV advertising languages largely from two aspects : one is for the linguistic functions of listening, speaking, reading, and writing and the other is for the linguistic principles of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Korean culture in advertisements is excluded because it is fragmentary and temporary.
Teaching the linguistic functions are classified into two categories : teaching Korean for Understanding and Expression. Teaching Korean for Understanding deals with effective methods of teaching listening and reading with TV advertising languages and teaching Korean for Expression treats positive methods of teaching speaking and writhing with TV advertising languages. There are selected TV advertisements for education in three stages : Pre-task performing, While-task performing and Post-task performing. For each stage, teaching methods with the advertisements are given in detail.
The part of teaching the linguistic principles is about methods of using TV advertising languages in 5 stages of Warm-up, Presentation, Practice, Use and Follow-up for teaching the linguistic principles of pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.
The significance of this study is to contrive effective methods of teaching Korean with TV advertising languages in the aspects of the linguistic functions and principles. In addition, the research devises techniques of using TV advertisements as useful teaching aids during classes not confined just to understanding the situations and contexts in the advertisements. I hope this study to be a small step in teaching Korean language, helping Korean teachers and learners who are willing to utilize TV advertising languages.
