Games are a very effective teaching and learning method in elementary English education. It is not only a way of giving joy to students, but also a mean of consolidating and extending one's knowledge of the language. Many people have researched the way of teaching through games. However they haven't concentrated games on pronunciation teaching.
The purpose of this study is to find the factors and methods of improving pronunciation abilities through English games for elementary school students.
For this purpose, literature review was carried out over analyzing of pronunciation. Then the analysis of the inclination of elementary school students and curriculum that was performed in English classes was carried out. After the main factors of interest in English games were abstracted, the methods of improving students' pronunciation ability in English gamed were designed. Then the games that satisfy the above-mentioned factors and methods were designed and applied to the elementary students.
The experimental classes with the games designed by this researcher were conducted for 12 weeks. To find out the effectiveness of the experimental classes, the survey on the students' interest and pronunciation ability were carried out before and after the experimental classes. The survey regarding the factors of interest was conducted after each class.
The methods of improving pronunciation ability in English games are as follows;
First, it is desirable to design and apply the games that the students haven't done before.
Second, different games should be used depending on English pronunciation skills each class focuses on.
Third, the factors of luck should be added to the class.
Fourth, it is very effective to use the compensation after a game activity.
Fifth, the teacher should explain the rules of games with easy words and simple expressions. It is helpful to add some Korean sentences if needed.
sixth, it is desirable to use the games requiring appropriate physical responses. But, these could be controled by instructors.
Seventh, it is helpful to give more chance of participation to all of the students. Pair games or group games are more efficient to encouragr students to take part in the games than whole class games.
In conclusion, it is necessary to design and apply the games that satisfy the seven factors and methods to improve pronunciation skill of elementary students in English games.
