The purpose of this study is to examine the status of female immigrants living in Busan and their satisfaction in life and level of adoption of the mother culture and mainstream culture in order to identify how acculturation types such as integration, assimilation, separation and marginalization are demonstrated. The study subjects are the female immigrants living in Busan who participate in the programs of the welfare center.
The study results are as follow. The most frequent acculturation type in Busan was separation, assimilation and marginalization in order so separation was the most common. It shows that female immigrants have low identity in the Korean culture while they have high identity in their mother culture. They frequently use their mother language and they feel friends from their hometown more comfortable than Korean friends. Female immigrants in Busan are having troubles adjusting to the exclusive cultures of Korea and they are required to be treated with more and diverse interest compared to those in other areas. In the statistical analysis regarding the relation between satisfaction in life and acculturation by the areas they are living in, there was significant difference in the marginalization and satisfaction in life. Also, the results were different by the mother countries with regard to the fluency in Korean language, assimilation, separation, marginalization, marriage, living standard, occupation and satisfaction about their daily lives. According to the results of regression analysis, it was significant in the assimilation, separation and marginalization. That is, the identity in Korean culture was higher as the fluency in Korean language was higher and those with vietnamese nationality had low tendency to be assimilated. This study provides the basic materials about acculturation by the satisfaction in life of the female immigrants. It intends to propose the methods to be positively and independently adapt to the Korean society.
