In this chapter the author explain thebackground, purpose of the study and the structure of the thesis.


1.1 The background of the study


1.1.1 The significance of learning English writing

It is reported that 93.6%of the interviewees who came from eightcities including Beijing, Shanghai etc said that company gave a high requirement on theEnglish speaking, reading and writing ability (Cai, 2017). It is no doubt that the society hashigher requirements on English proficiency in order to keep up with the development ofthe world. Therefore, China and its people have realized that they have to learn English soas to satisfy the society’s demand. So a lot of people start to learn English, including smallkids and the old people. Meanwhile, our government has been reinforcing improving ourstudents' English learning abilities. So it is very important for students to realize theimportance of learning English.
English language learning is made up of listening, speaking; reading and writing.Listening and reading are regarded as the language input. They are the foundation ofspeaking and writing which are regarded as language output. One must have enough inputwhen speaking English or writing English, because output must be based on input. Writingas a significant part of language output is more and more widely used in all kinds of fields.A great many letters, contracts and documents were written in English. Richards (2017)also maintained “Yet good writing skills are essential to academic success and arequirement for many occupations and professions” (p.100). On one hand, writing aslanguage output is the most difficult part among all the four skills. On the other hand,English writing is more difficult than writing in one's mother tongue. One must firstovercome the language barriers and negative transfer when writing an English essay.Nunan (2017) wrote the following: In terms of skills, the most difficult thing for second language learners is to produce a coherent, fluent, extended piece of writing. Writing issomething that most native speakers can hardly master. Richards (2017) shares the sameview with Nunan. In terms of writing, either a first or second language is one of the mostdifficult tasks that a learner will encounter.With the development of the reform in basic education, the New English Curriculumstandard has paid more attention to the training of the students' communication abilities ofusing the language. Therefore, English writing which is regarded as an authorized andeffective way to test the learners’ language competence. In recent years, writing becomesone of the important parts in National Matriculation English Test (NMET), which takes up20%of the total score.
