Paying attention to the correlation of wedding photos and wedding ceremony space when researching on ‘photo studio welding halls’ in Seochon area of Chungnam was the starting point of this study. As a result of newly discovering the ceremony space of the photo studio wedding hall and reinterpreting the changes of the wedding photography and the ceremony space, it was possible to specifically capture the change patterns of the marriage culture progressed with the change. The changes in the marriage culture since the 1950s, when Seocheon residents began to take photographs of the marriage ceremony commonly, were as following. First, engagement photographs weakened the function of sajudanja, one of the wedding documents of traditional wedding ceremonies. Since the late 1950s, ‘Matseon(meeting with a prospective marriage partner)’ became popular, and engagement photography was ritualized, and the most important ceremony on the day of engagement was the photo shooting of the bride and groom. Engagement photographs have been used to inform the relatives and neighbors of the bride and groom about the engagement, which has weakened the function of sajudanja. Second, the ‘emptying room’ and ‘engagement trip’ in Seocheon appeared because the meaning of engagement photos strengthened. In the 1960s and 1970s, when the groom went to the bride's house, the bride's parents sometimes emptied the room and allowed the bride and groom to sleep together, and on the day of engagement, in some cases, the bride and groom went on a trip for two days and one night. This physical engagement of the engagement period was possible after the engagement photograph was taken, so engagement photography was the starting point that allowed the bride and groom to physically combine. Third, the reason that ‘photo studio wedding ceremony’ and ‘photo studio wedding Hall’ appeared in Seocheon is because photographers jumped on the bandwagon of the trend of the era when wedding photos became ritualized and the new style weddings became popular. As the ceremony of the marriage photograph became ritual, the photographers who operated the photo studio started shooting at the photo studios rather than going out to photograph the marriage photograph. At that time, there was no ‘wedding hall’ in Seocheon where a new style wedding ceremony could be held, so the photo studio wedding ceremony appeared as photographers rented out the photo studios for free in order to take more wedding photos. Although the photo studio wedding ceremony was often for the bride and groom who preferred the new style wedding ceremony, in some cases, it was because the bride’s side could not afford to rent a wedding hall. In the early 1970s, as the demand for the photo studio wedding ceremony grew, the photo studio wedding halls were taking place around the five-day-market, and more and more brides and grooms had the new style wedding at the photo studio wedding halls. Fourth, since the introduction of photography in the wedding ceremony, the correlation between the wedding ceremony and the ceremony space was very large until 1980's, but it has decreased since the early 1990's. The photo studio wedding halls and the photographers rented out the photo galleries for free to the bride and groom but the bride and groom must basically take wedding photos instead. From this time on, according to the pursuit of the commercial profit of the photographers operating the photo studio, the number of photographs of the marriage photographs has increased and the size also has increased. In the 1980s, the most important product in the operation of a professional wedding hall was shooting wedding photos. However, since the 1990s, at the professional wedding halls or mixed wedding halls run by economic capitalists who are not involved in photography businesses, photo shooting was outsourced to outside photo studios, and they made profit with dress and food. Previously, photographers made profits from photography as a cultural capital, but since then economic capitalists have made profits from dresses and food, the proportion of wedding photography in operation has gradually decreased. However, due to the high ritualistic value of wedding ceremonial photography, wedding hall operators still considered the wedding ceremony photo shooting as very important for wedding hall operation. Fifth, the pursuit of commercial profit based on the cultural capital of the photographer was an important factor in the change of the photography space. After wedding photo shooting became ritualized, the space for photographing has changed back and forth from ‘outdoor’ to ‘indoor’. Wedding photography has changed from “outgoing (marriage photo) → indoor (marriage photo) → outgoing (outdoor marriage photo) → indoor (wedding photo) → outgoing (wedding photo and marriage photo)”. This phenomenon is seen in the process of photographers pursuing profits with the cultural capital of photography, or in the process of the photographers with small capital competing with economic capitalists with big capital. Sixth, the wedding ceremony is continuously changing with a focus on the bride and groom. When the new style wedding ceremony became common, as ‘friend representatives(the groom’s friends)’ of the traditional wedding ceremony appeared, the sequences of ‘exchange of gifts’, ‘presenting gift’, and ‘congratulatory speech’ were additionally carried out. In the new style wedding ceremony, new sequences such as ‘celebratory song’ and ‘moderator event’ appeared. Gradually, the wedding ceremony has been changing with a focus around the bride and groom to take more importance on the content rather than the form. When the wedding ceremony is carried out with a focus on the bride and groom, what becomes more important is the marriage photo being taken at the wedding hall. As the ceremony value of the photo shoot of the marriage increases, sometimes more significance is given to the marriage photos than the wedding ceremony as was with the ‘photo studio wedding ceremony’. Seventh, after the ceremony of wedding photo shoot became ritualized, two ‘cultural recurring phenomenon’ appeared in relation to wedding photo. One is that the ‘Hyeongurorae’ procedure of the traditional wedding ceremony was absorbed into the pyebeak ceremony(traditional ceremony to pay respect to the groom’s family by the newly-wedded couple right after their wedding) of the wedding hall. There was no pyebaek ceremony in the photo studio when the new wedding ceremony was popularized. In the photo studio, pyebaek ceremony did not take place, but it gradually have appeared in the professional wedding hall. In addition, the pyebaek ceremony was meaningful in that the bride and groom take pictures with the traditional wedding ceremony clothes, so it functioned to restore the disappeared traditional ritual. Another example is that the engagement picture disappeared with the annihilation of the engagement, but it is being resurrected as wedding pictures. Recently, as wedding photo taking moment became earlier, as there are cases where wedding photos are taken a few months before the wedding date, wedding photos function as engagement photos. As wedding photos, like the engagement photos before, function to prove the engagement situation, in other words, the situation that marriage was decided, the engagement photos have been revived in the form of wedding photos. After photography is introduced, although the culture of marriage seems to change linearly, it recurrently changes cyclically. It has changed in cycles from outdoors to indoor photography, after the engagement picture disappears, the wedding picture functions as engaged picture. The ceremony space has also changed in cycles from free use to paid use. Pyebaek ceremony was not taking place in wedding hall in the past, but now almost all wedding halls hold pyeback ceremony, the traditional wedding ceremony even got strengthened. Therefore, from the changes of wedding photos and wedding ceremony hall space, we can see that wedding ceremony culture does not linearly change, but changes in cycles recurrently.
