본 논문은 한국과 태국의 일상생활 속에서 사용 빈도가 높은 다의어 ‘먹다’와 같은 의미를 지닌 태국어의 ‘กิน[kin]’을 연구 대상으로 삼아 인지언어학의 이론을 바탕으로 대조 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 한국어를 공부하는 태국인 학습자를 위한 다의어 ‘먹다’의 교육 방안을 모색하였다.
태국인 한국어 학습자들도 다른 외국인 학습자들과 마찬가지로 다의어에 대한 이해가 부족해서 어색한 문장을 만들어 내거나 쉬운 어휘를 사용하지 못하고 어려운 어휘를 찾으려고 애쓰는 경우 많다. 본 연구에서는 동사 ‘먹다’를 통하여 언어의 다의적인 현상을 살펴보았다. 한국어와 태국어의 ‘먹다’의 다의어에 대한 비교 분석을 통해 공통점과 차이점을 밝히고 각각 지닌 특징을 찾아보았다.

Although the amount of research comparing and contrasting Thai and Korean is gradually increasing there is very little for Thai speakers dealing with words that have multiple meanings. The verb ‘먹다[mɔ:k ta:](to eat)’ is a very common word that we all learn from the very beginning thus this thesis will focus on the Korean and Thai word ‘먹다’ as well as the structure of their various meanings. Moreover, it will look for a method by which Thai learners are able to learn words like ‘먹다’ with all of their many meanings.
Before we begin comparing and contrasting the polysemous verb ‘먹다’ in the Korean & Thai language it would be best if we know exactly what polysemy itself is and what it can apply it. ‘먹다’ and ‘กิน[kin]’ are good examples of these words as they are frequently used in both countries and are very basic words but the meaning that they have changes according to the situation. Thus for the purpose of this I have looked closely at the given definitions in a Korean and Thai dictionary and have compared, contrasted and analyzed their meanings.
I compared the dictionary definitions of ‘먹다’ and กิน[kin] and classified them into five categories: words that have the same form and meaning, words that have a different form but a similar meaning, words that have a similar form but different meaning, uses that are only in Korean and uses that are only in Thai. Through this I’ve looked at the form and meaning that the words take on and looked for the similar and different points while at the same time looking at the culturally relevant points as demonstrated in the language. The relatively easiest category of ‘먹다’ and กิน[kin] for Thai learners is those that have the same meaning and the same form. However, the areas where the form is different but meaning is the same, or where the form is the same but the meaning is different or where the meaning only appears in Korean are difficult for Thai speakers to learn. Due to this difficulty I think there is a need to come up with a good method for Thai students to efficiently receive education on polysemous Korean words.
Lastly, I’ve looked into the current situation of education and Korean teaching materials on polysemous words. There is also research concerning what methods educators can use to get students to learn the meanings of words better as well as methods during class time to actively engage students in learning polysemous words.
I hope that this dissertation can be even a little help to Thai students of Korean dealing with the difficulty of learning the various meanings of ‘먹다’ and ‘กิน[kin]’ as well as help with research in the meaning of languages, especially in comparisons between Thai and Korean.
