The relationship between language and culture is complicated and inextricable. The content of culture melts into our daily language, while language is an important form of culture. Language and culture are inseparable. They affect and constrain each other. In a word, language is an inscape of culture, which is not only the symbol, but also a mirror that can reflect culture. Language is the tool of thinking and communication as well. It is the storage medium of thoughts, and also the way to express emotion. There are many expressions of people’s behavior and emotion in languages, in which we found that much of them have something to do with the botanic glossary. Then, why people use these botanic words to express their feelings?
What are the similarities and differences in this kind of expression in Chinese and Korean? What kind of culture are these symbolic interpretations representing in Korea and China? What roles are these symbolic words playing when teaching Korean as a foreign language? How can we improve the teaching by using this kind of glossary? We can answer these questions through a succession of research.
This focuses on the cultural implications of plants in Chinese and Korean. By comparative researches on these symbolic words, we can find the similarity and difference of Korean and Chinese culture and improve the methods of teaching Korean as a foreign language. As both China and Korea are East Asia countries, they have similarities in using botanic words to express their personality and feelings.
The first chapter shows the purpose, the necessities, the object and the methods of this study and summarizes the previous researches.
In the second chapter, the author examines the Chinese and Korean definition of symbolism and confirms the range of study.
In the third chapter, the author exemplifies and contrasts the basic meaning of Plum, Orchid, Bamboo and Chrysanthemum in Chinese and Korean dictionary.
In the forth chapter, the author discusses the symbolic meaning of Plum, Orchid, Bamboo and Chrysanthemum in Chinese and Korean and tells reasons that cause similarities and differences.
The fifth chapter shows the necessities and the way to introduce the symbolic meaning of words in teaching Korean as a foreign language.
The sixth chapter concludes the process and the results of this study and points out the shortcomings of this .
