Time expression of Korean language is composed of three grammatical categories such as tense, aspect, and mood. As the three categories are entangled each other as complex, it is one of difficult grammatical categories for many foreign learners including Chinese learners. Also, Chinese learners are particularly having a hard time with learning time expression in Korean language due to the linguistic difference between Korean and Chinese. Thus, it is necessary to study on the educational methods to teach time expression in Korean to Chinese learners.
This study first investigated the educational methods to teach tense and aspect among time expression in Korean grammatical elements since time expression is supposed to be taught from the beginning.
While Korean time expression is demonstrated through the use of tense, aspect, and mood, this study was mainly focusing on tense and aspect. Korean tense is expressed by pre-auslaut endings and modifiers based on the time of articulation and incident, with being divided as three types, past, present and future. Aspect is divided as perfect and progressive.
Issues on the educational curriculum for time expression have been examined with 5 types of textbooks for beginners that are mostly adopted in Korea and China. Tense and aspect are dealt in all 5 textbooks, whereas the definition and suggestion of usages are different depending on the type of textbooks. Textbooks used in China are dealing with more grammatical items for time expression, and it can be problematic that one grammatical item is explained as having various meanings in just one chapter all at one. Whereas, textbooks used in Korea have a problem with the definition and explanation compare to textbooks in China.
Based on the textbook analysis, the educational method for Korean time expression has been investigated for Chinese learners at beginner level. The analysis result reveals that it is necessary to pay more attention in the linguistic difference of properties between two languages, errors occurred to Chinese learners, and supplementary explanation and organization for textbooks in case of teaching Korean time expression to Chinese learners at beginner level. In addition, effective educational methods and activities for time expression were investigated in order to maximize the learning effect of Chinese learners. Centering on grammatical items for time expression including the verb ending ‘-었', modifier ‘-(으)ㄴ', and perfect form ‘-어서,' a lesson plan is suggested to have Chinese learners at beginner level learn Korean time expression easier and faster and comprehend it effectively.
Korean time expression is one of the important grammatical items and it is mostly dealt at the stage of beginner level. Unless learners are understanding on that grammatical element, they will have problems with it even at intermediate and advanced level, as well as have a hard time in communication. Given the current situation of the growing number of Chinese learners, the study is expected to help them learn Korean time expression more effectively.

외국어 학습자들이 외국어를 배우는 목적은 목표 언어를 모국어 화자처럼 발화하고 이해하고 활용하는데 있다. 이를 위하여 목표 언어의 문법 규칙을 제대로 알아야 한다. 더 나아가 그 규칙을 다른 문장에도 적용하여 자신이 원하는 대로 정확하게 표현할 수 있는 생산성을 발휘해야 하다. 한국어의 시간 표현은 중요 문법 요소 중의 하나다. 그러므로 원활한 의사소통을 하는데 시간 표현 문법 요소는 아주 중요하다.
시간 표현은 문장 단위의 발화나 작문에서 없어서는 안 되는 중요한 요소이다. 한국어 시간 표현은 주로 한국어 학습 초급에서 다루어진다. 초급에서 바르게 익히지 못하면 중급, 고급 단계까지 지속적으로 오류가 나타나게 된다. 그러므로 학습자는 초기 학습기에 시간 표현에 대해서 명확히 이해해야 한다.
따라서 본 논문에서는 한국어의 시간 표현 체계에 대해 분석하고, 한국어 교재에서 시간 표현의 문제점을 찾아 중국어권 초급 학습자를 위한 효과적인 교육 방안을 마련하고자 한다.
