The purpose of this dissertation is to understand the changing elements inside superhero films and study it through the perspective of storytelling. The new trend of superhero films that I intend to reveal can be characterized as the New media storytelling of the digital paradigm. More specifically, this relates to transmedia and franchise narratives, that fuels enjoyment culture. This dissertation understands the characteristics of superhero films as an intentional, and strategic form of storytelling. And I intend to analyze the text throughout the changing environments of media and film materials. Superhero films have a clear identity as a genre. The peculiarity of the image, the characteristics of the action genre, and finally the original comic contents itself that clearly shows the identity of the genre. But in more recent superhero films, the identity of these features are more focused on a calculative form of entertainment rather than adhering to the above traits. Yet, the elements in these films can be expanded by new media, and it is here where the identity of such films lands. Therefore, this dissertation will not be the analyzation of basic narrative structures. It will seek to explore the cultural characters of media, technology, sociality and entertainment. Studies on how these branches influence each other to eventually becoming a fundamental strategy of storytelling in these films will play a central part to this discussion. In chapter two titled ‘The Rise of the Digital Cinema Telling’, this part of the discussion will document how media environment changed to New Media environments, and the influence of digital technologies to film media. Eventually, such changes that are made to encourage audiences to fixate on narratives along with passive behaviors are part of the consumption process. In chapter three ‘The Social Reflection of Superhero Films as an Attraction Strategy’, the discussion will turn to the analysis of sociality in social, political and cultural criteria of superhero films. The purpose of revealing these social undertones is to prove and explain the fact that social influences are against the narrative text which mainly works as an attraction strategy. For instance, the cultural diversity of race, sex and religion that lie within superhero films can be clearly analyzed as the strategy for global marketing. In chapter 4 ‘The Use of New Media in Superhero Contents and the Enjoyment Vitalize Strategy’ I will reveal the analysis studies of superhero films understood by the new media. In the past the cross media of superhero contents was a ‘one on one exchange’ followed by a dramatize touch. But in more recent superhero content, these are newly expanded trans media stories made by various platforms. These changes influenced the audience culture too. The strong participant culture called ‘Fandom’ will be revealed as a key part to this discussion. In the final chapter titled ‘Marvel Cinema-The storytelling strategy’, I will reveal the details how my previous statements reflect superhero stories in numerous characteristic elements. The storytelling of superhero films is not simply adapted to the narrative structure as a cinematic convention. It should be understood as a strategy for entertainment content that had been influenced by the latest technology, enjoyment culture, marketing profit models, and finally the completeness of the story. To illustrate this, I will use the ‘Marvel cinematic universe’ as the key model to address the previous statements that I made. More specifically, I will seek to state how the characteristics of sociality and digital media can influence, ignite and adapt the makings of the story. The contents of my dissertation will show that superhero films are more than just spectacle blockbuster images but rather are part of a new media storytelling strategy that formulates entertainment content. The perspective views on superhero films are the process of an alternative and advanced study for a storytelling strategy. Further strengthened by the deepened media environment that continues to evolve along with adaptable technology, connections with different forms of the media and the realization of new media storytelling, Superhero films can be the intersecting text for digital paradigms and films. In this dissertation, thorough analyses are made on how superhero films are formed as a form of strategic storytelling, how digital technologies are used, the method on social elements grinded to industrial film and the narrative content marketing to reveal the relationship between different forms of the media.
