With the emergence of the objet in modern art, artists have been given the opportunity to intuitively produce work without being restricted by material or genre; the objet has begun to play an important role through the constitution of a formal language that expresses modern society and modern-day ideology
My series, “Regenesis,” is a series in which abandoned objets (nickel tableware) are sculpted into animal figures through multiple processes of production.
Since the Industrial Revolution, groundbreaking developments in science and technology have led to continuous product development and mass production, satisfying people’s materialistic needs and leading to prosperity; however, as Veblen (2007, p. 124) asserted, “consumption itself has become the reason for human existence” under the brand of conspicuous consumption. Such changes in the culture of consumption have not only changed values regarding materials but those regarding human relationships. In today’s society, society determines the rules of conduct within a social structure and forces and educates human beings who are suited to such rules; people who do not fit such rules are branded as defective and fall behind in society. Such social structures have led to the phenomenon of human isolation; the isolated members of modern society live with indifference, pain, and wounds.
As a member of a modern society structured in this way, I began working on this when I accidently found abandoned nickel tableware on the street amidst facing an uncertain future as a sculpture major and amidst contempt towards human relationships. As such, I perceived a worn and battered nickel pot as a form that could only be found in my subconsciousness. Nickel tableware, abandoned after use, goes through collection and labor-intensive accumulation (集積) processes. By such pieces with a hammer and folding the corners of cut pieces, a process of understanding and curing the nickelware of its past is undertaken and I come to consider such pieces a part of myself (同一視). The animal-like aggregate form, accumulated (蓄積) and piled (集積), goes through a plasticization (燒成) process using fire (火), is cured of its past wounds and purified, and given new meaning and strong vital force.
This study utilizes the theoretical concept of the objet and examines previous artists that have used this concept in order to analyze works that have utilized objets. Moreover, through the series “Regenesis,” created based on my experience of the modern phenomenon of human isolation, this study examines the social meaning of the abandoned objet and the purpose of the work in order to provide directions for my future work as an artist.
