This focused on suprasegmental phoneme that influences phonetic
fluency for advanced Korean language learner. According to
Anderson-Hsieh, J. et al.(1992) and Pavel Trofimovich et al.(2006),
suparsegmental phoneme error has more effect on speech disfluent than
segmental error. This thesis based on the assumption that suprasegmental
phoneme have a greater influence on phonetic fluency than pronunciation,
and the result could be used for suprasegmental phoneme education material
in Korean pronunciation teaching and learning.
In the first chapter, the purpose of this study is referred. Anderson-Hsieh,
J. et al.(1992) considers prosodic error as the major factor affecting speech
disfluency among prosodic error, segmental error and syllable structure
error. The trend of study on Korean pronunciation education was about
segment, even though learning suprasegmental phoneme is more important
for fluent speech like a native speaker. Thus the necessity of study on
suprasegmental phoneme was emphasized on this chapter.
In the second chapter, theoretical background of this study is described.
There were two major theoretical backgrounds. One was a concept of
fluency, and the other was about target of evaluation that was required
when phonetic fluency was evaluated. First, a general concept of fluency
was a concept had been considered in two ways: Spoken language, Written
language. Nevertheless, spoken language have been considered only, and
according to some scholars, phonetic fluency can be defined as flowing and
natural speech like a native speaker. Second theoretical background was a
suprasegmental phoneme category as valuation basis, and the detailed
evaluation item are accent, tempo, intonation, sound, stuttering, hesitancy
and length of pause.
In the third chapter, an experiment was conducted. Five advanced Korean
language learners who have different nationalities were evaluated their
speech by four assessors, who are majoring Korean education. Correlation
analysis was conducted as an evaluation form by using SPSS20.0. In the
result, speaking, pronunciation and suprasegmental phoneme are ranked in
order of score. In addition, correlation analysis among the detailed
evaluation items was conducted.
The last chapter is a review of the study with result and suggestion. The
result from the experiments are as in the following.
Firstly, phonetic fluency evaluation by assessors is more affected by
suprasegmental phoneme rather than correct pronunciation of segment.
Secondly, in the correlation analysis among suprasegmental phonemes for
phonetic fluency, phonetic fluency has strong relations with accent followed
by tempo, length of pause, intonation and sound. In other words, the more
suprasegmental phonemes such as accent, tempo, length of pause, intonation
and sound are fluency, the more assessors tend to evaluate the speeches
as phonetic fluency.
Third, accent, which had biggest influence to phonetic fluency in the
correlation analysis among suprasegmental phonemes, is highly correlated
with intonation.
